Through a planned process since 1947, there has been a major expansion in infrastructure and systems for providing healthcare services throughout Arunachal Pradesh. The State has adopted Central Government norms, guidelines, policies and programmes to strengthen healthcare development and improve public health services.
Several statewide initiatives have been introduced to improve the reach and quality of healthcare services. These include multi-disease surveillance systems, streamlined drug procurement and distribution, rational use of medicines, Panchabyadhi Chikitsa Scheme, Infant Mortality Rate Reduction Mission and mandatory placement of doctors in difficult areas after post-graduation.
Arunachal Pradesh has emerged as a pioneer in various healthcare reforms. District-level initiatives have strengthened primary healthcare through community participation, mobility support for field staff, better health education systems and maintenance of healthcare infrastructure.
The Policy and Strategic Planning Unit (PSPU) has initiated important policy reforms including health financing and strategic healthcare development planning to improve healthcare accessibility and quality across the State.
An integrated health policy statement has been developed for the planned and comprehensive growth of the entire health sector, including public, private and voluntary healthcare institutions, as well as allopathic, ayurvedic, homeopathic and Indian systems of medicine.
The policy addresses important determinants of public health such as nutrition, sanitation, water supply and environmental hazards to ensure improved healthcare accessibility and better health outcomes for citizens.
The Arunachal Pradesh State Integrated Health Policy provides strategic direction for healthcare development in a state-specific context and serves as a framework for planning, implementation and review of health programs and operational strategies.
The Mission of the Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, is to improve the health status of the people through active community participation and by making healthcare socially equitable, accessible and affordable within a reasonable timeframe.
